چکیده

We used a sequential synthesis problem to investigate novice teachers’ conceptual difficulties in hydrodynamics. Twenty-one new secondary level physics teachers from various regions of China, who had been service for no more than 2 years, participated the study. Each participant completed written hydrodynamics consisting four questions, all which were related situation about water flowing long, nonuniform tube different cross sections, heights, and orientations. Analysis performances exposed number errors. To further their underlying notions hydrodynamics, we conducted one-on-one interviews with 13 selected randomly those making such errors on test. The revealed three major categories held by our teachers. These relate (a) ontological confusions misuse properties associated solid, liquid, gas; (b) deficient perceptions force-motion work-energy analysis; (c) mischaracterizations nature Bernoulli’s equation quantities therein. Here, not only replicated some literature-reported misconceptions but also uncovered teachers, an underresearched population this topic.Received 4 November 2020Accepted 3 May 2021DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevPhysEducRes.17.010142Published American Physical Society under terms Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Using Digital Video to Investigate Teachers’ In-the-Moment Noticing

Understanding teacher cognition – and in particular teacher noticing poses significant challenges to researchers because of the ongoing nature of teaching. To overcome those challenges learning science researchers have used a variety of methods to help them understand how teachers reason and make decisions while teaching. In this symposium we describe a new digital technology that allows teache...
